Description Services for Museums and Exhibits
The appropriate
amount of audio description for museums and exhibits depends
upon the content of the displays. As well, the development
of digital technology for the delivery of audio description
also influences the discussion of how much audio description
is appropriate.
With today's random access digital playback devices, the
audio describer must describe a large sample of exhibit
items so that descriptions are available as each visitor
makes his or her personal choices as to which portions of an
exhibit to explore and which to omit.
For example, the total amount of audio description for a
display of fairly commonplace objects and visuals might be
as little as twice the amount of time a typical sighted
visitor might spend exploring the exhibition. On the other
hand, the audio description for a period home of significant
historical importance or an exhibit that contains artifacts
from a culture or time period unfamiliar to most visitors
would probably total at least three or four times the amount
of time a typical sighted person might spend visiting the
exhibition.
Most sighted visitors' appreciation comes from a combination
of seeing the visual presentation and reading portions of
the legends and captions which supply context for the
visuals. This is what audio description provides for
visitors who are blind or who have low vision--an audio
version of what sighted visitors may choose to see and
learn.
